Why It Matters

The science behind mount height

The centre of your TV should align with your seated eye level. Looking upward for extended periods compresses the cervical spine and causes neck and upper back fatigue. Even a small upward angle sustained over a 2-hour film causes real discomfort.

Seated eye level

For standard upright sofa seating, eye level is approximately 105 cm (41") from the floor. This is your target centre height. Everything else follows from this number.

Why most TVs are mounted too high

People reference bars and commercial spaces where TVs are mounted high for standing crowds. Home viewing is different. Eye level when seated is always the correct reference point.

tip

For 65" TVs specifically: Your TV is approximately 80 cm tall. At the standard 105 cm centre height, the bottom edge sits at about 65 cm from the floor and the top edge at about 145 cm. The bottom edge should be at a comfortable height - not so low it is obscured by furniture.

Also check your viewing distance

Once your TV is at the right height, make sure you are sitting at the right distance too.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

For standard upright sofa seating, mount the centre of your 65" TV at 105 cm (41") from the floor. The bottom edge will be at approximately 65 cm and the top edge at 145 cm. Use the calculator above if your seating position differs.
Yes. A 65" TV is heavy. Drywall alone cannot support the weight safely - mount into the wooden studs behind the wall. A stud finder costs under $20 and takes five minutes to use. Do not skip this step.
A tilting mount lets you angle the screen 5-15 degrees downward - useful if you mount slightly higher than ideal. A full-motion mount extends and swivels - useful if you watch from multiple positions. For most living rooms a tilting mount is sufficient and costs less.
Most 65" TVs use a 400x400mm VESA pattern, though this varies by manufacturer. Check your TV manual or the manufacturer website for the exact pattern before buying a bracket. Common alternatives are 400x200mm and 600x400mm.
