Which size for your room?
TV size is determined by viewing distance. Use this table to find the right size for your room.
| Viewing Distance | 4K Ideal | 4K Range | 1080p Range | Typical Room |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5-6 ft / 1.5-1.8m | 40-43" | 38-50" | 43-55" | Small bedroom, studio |
| 7-8 ft / 2.1-2.4m | 50-55" | 45-60" | 50-65" | Bedroom, small living room |
| 8-10 ft / 2.4-3.0m | 55-65" | 50-70" | 55-75" | Standard living room |
| 10-12 ft / 3.0-3.7m | 65-75" | 60-80" | 65-85" | Large living room |
| 12-15 ft / 3.7-4.6m | 75-85" | 70-90" | 75-95" | Home theater, open plan |
| 15+ ft / 4.6m+ | 85"+ | 85-100"+ | 90-100"+ | Dedicated home theater |
The formula: Divide your viewing distance in inches by 1.6 for the ideal 4K size. Example: 10 ft (120 in) / 1.6 = 75 inches. For 1080p divide by 1.8.
Best TV size for each room
Best TV size for a living room
Most living rooms have a sofa 8-10 feet (2.4-3 m) from the TV wall. At this distance a 55-inch or 65-inch TV is ideal. The 55-inch is the most popular size globally because it suits this exact viewing distance. If your sofa is further back at 10-12 feet, size up to 65 or 75 inches.
Best TV size for a bedroom
Bedroom TVs are typically watched from 6-9 feet (1.8-2.7 m) from bed. A 43-inch or 50-inch TV suits most bedrooms. If your bedroom is large and you watch from across the room, a 55-inch works well. Avoid going larger than 55 inches in a bedroom - it dominates the space at close range.
Best TV size for a home theater
Dedicated home theaters typically have 12-15 feet (3.7-4.6 m) of viewing distance. Ideal for 75-inch to 85-inch TVs. For true cinema immersion at 15 feet, an 85-inch TV or a 100-inch projector screen hits the THX 36-degree viewing angle.
Best TV size for a small apartment
Small apartments often have viewing distances of only 5-7 feet (1.5-2.1 m). A 43-inch 4K TV is the right choice. A 55-inch at 6 feet exceeds 45 degrees viewing angle, which causes eye strain.
TV size by size
Exact viewing distances and room recommendations for every common screen size.
32-inch TV - ideal viewing distance 1.2-2.0 m
Best for kitchens, small bedrooms, children's rooms, desk setups. Screen width: 70.8 cm. Rarely the right choice for a living room - at typical sofa distances it appears too small.
43-inch TV - ideal viewing distance 1.6-2.7 m
Best for bedrooms, small apartments, kitchen living areas. At 1.8 m a 43-inch 4K TV delivers a sharp, immersive image. The most popular bedroom size globally. Screen width: 95.3 cm. If your bed or bedroom seating is 2 m from the wall, a 43-inch is the correct choice.
50-inch TV - ideal viewing distance 1.9-3.2 m
Best for bedrooms with more space, compact living rooms. A solid upgrade from 43-inch for a living room where the sofa is 2-2.5 m away. Screen width: 110.7 cm. Often the right answer for tight spaces where a 55-inch would be too large.
55-inch TV - ideal viewing distance 2.1-3.5 m
Best for standard living rooms and main bedrooms. The world's most popular TV size. At 2.4 m (8 ft) a 55-inch gives a 34-degree viewing angle - close to the THX 36-degree ideal. Screen width: 121.7 cm. If your sofa is 2.5-3 m from the wall, a 55-inch is very likely the right choice.
65-inch TV - ideal viewing distance 2.5-4.2 m
Best for large living rooms, family rooms, open plan spaces. At 2.5 m a 65-inch gives exactly the THX 36-degree viewing angle. Screen width: 144.0 cm. The fastest growing TV size as prices have dropped. If your sofa is 3 m or more from the wall, a 65-inch is likely better than a 55-inch.
75-inch TV - ideal viewing distance 2.9-4.8 m
Best for large living rooms and home theaters. At 3 m a 75-inch gives a 34-degree viewing angle. Requires a wall at least 180 cm wide. Screen width: 166.1 cm. The right choice when your sofa is 3.5 m or more from the TV wall.
85-inch TV - ideal viewing distance 3.2-5.4 m
Best for dedicated home theaters and very large living rooms. At 3.5 m an 85-inch gives a 34-degree viewing angle. Screen width: 188.2 cm. Requires a wall at least 200 cm wide. The TV stands nearly 120 cm tall including the stand base.
98-inch TV - ideal viewing distance 3.7-6.3 m
Near-cinema scale. Screen width: 217.0 cm. Weight: 80-120 kg - structural wall mounting required. At these sizes a projector often becomes a more practical alternative for screens above 100 inches.
THX, SMPTE and ITU-R explained
- THX (36 degrees): The professional cinema certification standard. Recommends a 36-degree horizontal viewing angle for cinema-quality immersion at home.
- SMPTE (30 degrees): The professional filmmaking standard. Comfortable for daily TV watching - slightly more relaxed than THX.
- ITU-R BT.2022: The international 4K standard recommends sitting at 1.5 times the screen height. For a 65-inch TV (81 cm tall), that is 1.5 x 81 = 121 cm minimum distance.
- 4K advantage: 4K has 163 PPI versus 92 PPI for 1080p. Higher pixel density means 30-40% closer viewing without visible pixels.
