Methodology

How the recommendation is calculated

Every verdict traces to a published standard. No opinion, no brand preference. The formula is: optimal viewing distance = screen width / (2 × tan(FOV / 2)).

THX
General viewing
28 – 50°
THX recommends a horizontal field of view between 28 and 50 degrees for comfortable long-session viewing. Below 28 degrees the screen feels distant; above 50 degrees peripheral eye movement increases fatigue. At their reference angle of 36 degrees, optimal distance equals approximately 1.54 times screen width.
SMPTE
Cinematic / gaming
40°
SMPTE sets 30 degrees as the minimum reference viewing angle, with 40 degrees as the preferred cinematic threshold. At 40 degrees, optimal distance equals approximately 1.37 times the screen width. For gaming, 40 to 55 degrees is the recommended immersive range.
4K pixel limit
Minimum distance
0.8×
At 4K resolution, the minimum viewing distance before pixel structure becomes visible is 0.8 times the screen width in the same unit. At 1080p this increases to 1.2 times. Sitting closer than these limits negates the resolution benefit and reveals the pixel grid.

The tool applies both checks simultaneously. A size scores "perfect" when the viewing distance falls within the resolution-optimal range and the field of view lands in the standard-recommended window for your use case. A size that passes one check but not the other scores "good."

The formula: field of view = 2 × arctan(screen width in feet ÷ (2 × viewing distance in feet)). All standards reference horizontal field of view measured from the centre of the screen, not diagonal screen size.

FAQ

Common questions answered

What TV size is best for a 9 foot viewing distance?
At 9 feet with a 4K TV, the ideal size is 65 to 75 inches. This places your horizontal field of view between 38 and 44 degrees, within the THX recommended range of 28 to 50 degrees and near the SMPTE cinematic threshold of 40 degrees. For 1080p at 9 feet, 70 to 80 inches is the equivalent range because the higher minimum viewing distance shifts the ideal window up.
What TV size fits a 12x14 room?
In a 12 by 14 foot room with a standard sofa placement 8 to 9 feet from the TV wall, the ideal size is 55 to 75 inches for 4K. The room width of 12 feet comfortably accommodates a 75-inch TV, which is 65 inches wide, leaving roughly 20 inches of wall clearance on each side. Enter your exact sofa distance in the tool above for a precise recommendation.
How is optimal TV viewing distance calculated?
Optimal viewing distance is calculated as: distance = screen width / (2 × tan(FOV angle / 2)). For THX's reference angle of 36 degrees, this gives approximately 1.54 times the screen width. For SMPTE's preferred angle of 40 degrees, the formula gives approximately 1.37 times screen width. For 4K, the additional constraint is a minimum distance of 0.8 times screen width to prevent visible pixel structure.
How do I know if a TV is too big for my room?
A TV is too big if your viewing distance is less than 0.8 times the screen width in inches converted to feet (for 4K). At that distance, pixel structure becomes visible and the field of view exceeds 60 degrees, causing fatigue in long sessions. The tool flags this as "too close" in the distance metric and colours the size red.
Is 4K worth it at 10 feet viewing distance?
Yes, for screens 65 inches and larger. At 10 feet, a 65-inch 4K panel delivers approximately 162 pixels per degree of visual arc, above the 60 PPI threshold where the human eye resolves individual pixels under normal conditions. Below 55 inches at 10 feet, the perceptual benefit of 4K over 1080p is marginal at typical brightness levels.
What is the SMPTE standard for TV viewing distance?
SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommends a minimum field of view of 30 degrees for reference viewing, with 40 degrees as the preferred cinematic threshold. At 9 feet, 30 degrees corresponds to a 55-inch screen and 40 degrees to approximately a 70-inch screen. All SMPTE figures reference horizontal field of view, not diagonal screen size.
What is the ideal seating zone for a 65-inch TV?
For a 65-inch 4K TV, the ideal seating zone is 4.2 to 8.1 feet. The minimum of 4.2 feet is set by the 4K pixel density limit (0.8 times screen width). The maximum of 8.1 feet is set by THX's 28-degree minimum field of view. The SMPTE preferred viewing distance at 40 degrees is 5.9 feet. For 1080p, the ideal zone shifts to 6.4 to 8.1 feet.
