Is a 55-inch TV too big for a living room?
The short answer is no. 55 inches is the global best-seller for a reason. Here is where it works and when to go bigger.
55 inches is ideal for most living rooms
A 55-inch TV works well in any living room where the sofa is 6 to 9 feet from the TV wall. That covers the majority of standard living room layouts. It is the global best-seller for exactly this reason.
Where 55 inches works and where it does not
| Room size | Typical viewing distance | 55” result | Better choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small (10 x 10 ft) | 5 – 6 ft | Good (38 – 44° FOV) | 55” or 50” |
| Standard (12 x 14 ft) | 7 – 9 ft | Ideal (30 – 36° FOV) | 55” |
| Large (14 x 18 ft) | 10 – 12 ft | Small feeling (24 – 28° FOV) | 65” or 75” |
| Open plan (20+ ft) | 12 – 16 ft | Too small | 75” or 85” |
When to step up to 65 inches
The single question to ask: is your viewing distance 8 feet or more? If yes, choose 65 inches.
At 8 feet, a 55-inch TV delivers 31 degrees of horizontal field of view. A 65-inch at the same distance delivers 37 degrees. That 6-degree difference is clearly perceptible. Most people sitting 8 feet from a 55-inch TV feel it is slightly small after a month of use.
At 6 to 7 feet, the 55-inch is the right choice. At 6 feet, it already delivers 36 to 40 degrees, which is at the top of the THX comfortable range. A 65-inch at 6 feet pushes to 44 degrees, which is fine but beginning to feel large in a smaller room.
Quick rule: sit at your normal distance. If the thumb of one hand, held at arm's length, is wider than your TV, you need a bigger screen. If the thumb is less than half the TV width, it is probably right.
