Wall mount vs TV stand: which is right for you?

Wall mounting is better for most setups. But there are real cases where a stand wins. The decision comes down to one factor most guides skip.

Ergonomics comparisonCost and installationHeight optimization
The key factor

The one thing most guides miss

Every wall mount vs stand comparison covers aesthetics, cable management, and installation difficulty. Almost none of them cover the most important factor: viewing height.

The center of your TV should sit at your eye level when seated, approximately 105 cm (41 inches) from the floor for standard sofa seating. Wall mounting lets you set this exactly. A TV stand does not. The stand's height is fixed, and most consumer furniture places the TV center between 60 and 85 cm from the floor, consistently too low.

The most common stand mistake: buying a media unit that places the TV center below 80 cm. This forces a downward gaze angle that, combined with typical sofa depth, strains the lower cervical spine over long sessions. Too low is less damaging than too high, but it is still incorrect.

Decision guide

Which is right for your situation?

Choose wall mount if

You own your home. You want precise height control. You have children or pets and need to eliminate tipping risk. You want the cleanest possible look. You do not move frequently.

Choose TV stand if

You rent and cannot drill. You move every one to two years. You want to reposition the TV easily. You need storage for devices and media directly beneath the TV.

If you choose a stand: measure the stand height before buying. Calculate where the TV center will land. It should be 95 to 115 cm from the floor. Most standard entertainment units need a 15 to 20 cm riser or a specifically sized stand to hit this target.

Mount types

Choosing the right wall mount

Fixed mount

Lowest profile, strongest hold, lowest cost. The right choice if you mount at exactly the correct height. Cannot tilt or swivel.

Tilting mount

Allows 5 to 15 degrees of downward tilt. Useful if the mounting position is slightly higher than ideal, or if glare from a window requires angling the screen. Adds 1 to 3 cm of depth off the wall.

Full-motion mount

Extends, swivels, and tilts. Best for rooms where you watch from multiple positions (open plan, L-shaped rooms). Adds 5 to 12 cm off the wall when extended, more off the wall at maximum extension. Use only with stud mounting, never drywall anchors alone.

FAQ

Common questions answered

Is wall mounting a TV always better than a stand?
For homeowners wanting a permanent setup with correct ergonomics, yes in almost all cases. For renters or those who move frequently, a stand is more practical. The ergonomic advantage of wall mounting only materializes if you install the bracket at the correct height: center of screen at approximately 105 cm for standard sofa seating.
Can I wall mount without finding studs?
For TVs under 32 inches, toggle bolts rated for the weight can work. For 43 inches and above, mount into studs. A 65-inch TV with a full-motion bracket can exert over 50 kg of force on the mount. Drywall anchors alone are not reliable for this load over time, especially with full-motion mounts that create leverage.
What is the correct height for a wall-mounted TV?
Mount the center of the TV at seated eye level: approximately 105 cm (41 inches) from the floor for standard sofa seating, 90 cm for reclined or bed viewing. Our mount height calculator gives exact bracket placement based on your TV size and seating position.
Will wall mounting void my TV warranty?
No. Wall mounting using a VESA-compatible bracket does not void the manufacturer warranty. Check your TV's VESA pattern (e.g. 400x400) and ensure the bracket supports it. The bracket must also be rated for the TV's weight, which is listed in the spec sheet.
Is a tilting or fixed mount better?
Fixed is better when you mount at exactly the right height. Tilting is useful when the mounting position is 10 to 15 cm higher than ideal, allowing you to angle the screen down to compensate. Full-motion brackets are best for rooms with multiple viewing positions.
