Wall mount vs TV stand: which is right for you?
Wall mounting is better for most setups. But there are real cases where a stand wins. The decision comes down to one factor most guides skip.
The one thing most guides miss
Every wall mount vs stand comparison covers aesthetics, cable management, and installation difficulty. Almost none of them cover the most important factor: viewing height.
The center of your TV should sit at your eye level when seated, approximately 105 cm (41 inches) from the floor for standard sofa seating. Wall mounting lets you set this exactly. A TV stand does not. The stand's height is fixed, and most consumer furniture places the TV center between 60 and 85 cm from the floor, consistently too low.
The most common stand mistake: buying a media unit that places the TV center below 80 cm. This forces a downward gaze angle that, combined with typical sofa depth, strains the lower cervical spine over long sessions. Too low is less damaging than too high, but it is still incorrect.
Wall mount vs stand across every factor
| Factor | Wall mount | TV stand |
|---|---|---|
| Height control | Exact: set center at 105 cm | Fixed by furniture height |
| Ergonomics | Optimal when installed correctly | Depends on stand height |
| Installation | 30 to 90 min, requires studs | 10 min, no tools needed |
| Renter-friendly | No: leaves holes in wall | Yes: no wall damage |
| Safety (kids / pets) | Eliminates tipping risk | Tipping risk unless secured |
| Aesthetics | Clean, minimal | Varies with furniture choice |
| Cable management | Cables hidden in wall (optional) | Cables visible behind stand |
| Repositioning | Difficult, requires remounting | Easy, move anytime |
| Cost (bracket) | €15 to €150+ | Stand cost already in furniture |
| Cost (installation) | €0 DIY or €80 to €150 professional | €0 |
Which is right for your situation?
Choose wall mount if
You own your home. You want precise height control. You have children or pets and need to eliminate tipping risk. You want the cleanest possible look. You do not move frequently.
Choose TV stand if
You rent and cannot drill. You move every one to two years. You want to reposition the TV easily. You need storage for devices and media directly beneath the TV.
If you choose a stand: measure the stand height before buying. Calculate where the TV center will land. It should be 95 to 115 cm from the floor. Most standard entertainment units need a 15 to 20 cm riser or a specifically sized stand to hit this target.
Choosing the right wall mount
Fixed mount
Lowest profile, strongest hold, lowest cost. The right choice if you mount at exactly the correct height. Cannot tilt or swivel.
Tilting mount
Allows 5 to 15 degrees of downward tilt. Useful if the mounting position is slightly higher than ideal, or if glare from a window requires angling the screen. Adds 1 to 3 cm of depth off the wall.
Full-motion mount
Extends, swivels, and tilts. Best for rooms where you watch from multiple positions (open plan, L-shaped rooms). Adds 5 to 12 cm off the wall when extended, more off the wall at maximum extension. Use only with stud mounting, never drywall anchors alone.
