TV neck strain: the height fix
Neck pain from TV watching has one cause in almost every case: the TV is too high. Here is the fix.
Why TV height causes neck pain
The cervical spine has a natural forward curve. In a neutral seated position, your gaze falls slightly downward, between 0 and 15 degrees below horizontal. This is the position your neck is designed to maintain for extended periods.
When the TV is mounted too high, you hold a sustained upward extension. The posterior neck muscles, specifically the splenius capitis and trapezius, contract continuously to hold this position. At a 20-degree upward gaze, these muscles are working at approximately 30% of their maximum voluntary contraction. Hold that for 90 minutes of a film and fatigue is inevitable.
The irony: most people mount TVs high because it looks better in an empty room. The showroom effect. In practice, watching a TV mounted at 130 cm versus 105 cm produces measurable neck fatigue in controlled studies of two-hour viewing sessions.
Where to mount it for zero strain
The target is simple: center of the TV at seated eye level. Eye level varies by seating type.
| Seating type | Eye level (typical) | TV center target |
|---|---|---|
| Upright sofa | 105 cm (41”) | 105 cm (41”) |
| Reclined sofa | 90 cm (35”) | 90 cm (35”) |
| Floor cushions | 75 cm (30”) | 75 cm (30”) |
| Bed (semi-reclined) | 85 cm (33”) | 85 cm (33”) |
| Dining chair | 115 cm (45”) | 115 cm (45”) |
Temporary fixes if you cannot move the bracket
Use tilt if your mount has it
A 10-degree downward tilt on a TV mounted 15 cm too high will redirect your gaze close to horizontal at typical viewing distances of 2.5 to 3.5 m. Not perfect, but significantly better than looking straight up at the screen.
Raise the seating position
Adding a firm seat cushion platform of 10 to 15 cm raises your eye level by the same amount, bringing it closer to the TV center. This works best for modest height discrepancies of 10 to 20 cm.
Move the sofa closer
Sitting closer to a TV that is too high reduces the upward angle because the geometry changes. At 2 m from a TV with a center at 130 cm, the upward angle is less severe than at 3.5 m. This is a workaround, not a solution.
