TV Mount Height at Eye Level: Exact Measurements by Seating

TV mount height at eye level

Eye-level mounting eliminates neck strain. Here are the exact measurements for every seating type, based on ISO 9241.

The standard

Why eye level is the correct target

ISO 9241-303 specifies that display centers should be positioned at or slightly below the resting eye line for sustained viewing. The acceptable range is 0 to 15 degrees below horizontal. Zero to 30 degrees above horizontal is where strain begins.

For TV viewing specifically, the target is the center of the screen at seated eye level. This is not the bottom or the top: the center. A 65-inch TV has a panel height of 81 cm. If the center is at 105 cm, the bottom is at 64.5 cm and the top is at 145.5 cm.

FAQ

Common questions answered

What height should a TV be mounted at eye level?
For standard upright sofa seating, mount the center of the TV at 105 cm (41 inches) from the floor. For reclined viewing, lower to 90 cm. For bed viewing in a semi-reclined position, 85 cm is the target. These values are based on average adult seated eye heights per ISO 9241-303.
How do I find my personal eye level for mounting?
Sit in your normal watching position. Have someone measure from the floor to your eye line while you hold your head in your natural resting position, not craning upward or downward. That measurement is your personal seated eye level. Mount the TV center at that height.
What height should the bottom of the TV be?
The bottom of the TV should be at the center target height minus half the TV panel height. For a 65-inch TV (81 cm tall) with a target center of 105 cm, the bottom sits at 64.5 cm (25 inches) from the floor. For a 55-inch TV (68.6 cm tall), the bottom sits at 70.7 cm (28 inches).
My mounting height looks too low. Is it correct?
Eye-level mounting almost always looks lower than expected. Most people are accustomed to TVs mounted above 120 cm center height, which is too high. A 65-inch TV with the bottom edge at 64 cm looks very low when you are standing in the room, but is correct when you sit on the sofa at eye level. Trust the measurement over the visual impression.
