How much bigger is one size vs another?
Screen size is diagonal, so the difference in width and height is less dramatic than the number suggests - but still significant.
| Comparison | Width difference | Height difference | Screen area increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43" vs 55" | +26.4 cm | +15.0 cm | +63% |
| 55" vs 65" | +22.3 cm | +12.4 cm | +39% |
| 65" vs 75" | +22.1 cm | +12.5 cm | +33% |
| 75" vs 85" | +22.1 cm | +12.4 cm | +28% |
| 55" vs 75" | +44.4 cm | +24.9 cm | +85% |
| 65" vs 85" | +44.2 cm | +24.9 cm | +70% |
Screen area increases faster than the diagonal because both width and height grow together. A 75-inch TV has 85% more screen area than a 55-inch, even though the diagonal is only 36% larger.
Planning your space
- Wall mounting: Add 10-15 cm to the screen width for comfortable fit with cable management. A 65-inch screen is 144 cm wide - plan for 155-160 cm of clear wall.
- TV stand or cabinet: The stand should be at least as wide as the TV's physical width. For a 55-inch TV with 125 cm physical width, use a stand at least 125 cm wide - ideally 130-135 cm.
- Viewing distance: See the table above for minimum and ideal viewing distances per size. Sitting closer than minimum causes eye strain; sitting farther than ideal loses fine detail.
- Mount height: The centre of the screen should be at seated eye level (100-107 cm from the floor for a standard sofa). Bottom edge = centre height minus half the screen height.
- Room clearance: Allow at least 30 cm of space above and to the sides of the TV for ventilation, especially for OLED models.
Buying tip: Always measure your wall or stand width before buying. The most common TV return reason is size mismatch. A 65-inch TV is 144 cm wide - verify you have 155 cm of clear wall before purchasing.
