Best TV size for a small bedroom
Bedroom viewing distances are shorter than living rooms. The right TV size is smaller than most people expect.
Why bedrooms need smaller TVs
In a living room you might sit 10 to 12 feet from the TV. In a bedroom, the foot of the bed to the opposite wall is typically 6 to 9 feet. That shorter distance means a smaller TV is needed to stay within comfortable field-of-view limits.
Buying the same 65-inch TV you saw in a showroom and installing it in a bedroom where you are 7 feet away creates a 44-degree field of view. That is above the THX 40-degree comfort threshold and will feel uncomfortably large within the first week.
Recommended sizes by bedroom type
| Bedroom size | Typical viewing distance | Recommended size (4K) | Max size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small (9 x 10 ft) | 6 ft (1.8 m) | 43” | 50” |
| Medium (10 x 12 ft) | 7 ft (2.1 m) | 43 – 50” | 55” |
| Large (12 x 14 ft) | 8 ft (2.4 m) | 50 – 55” | 65” |
| Master (14+ ft) | 9 – 10 ft | 55 – 65” | 75” |
Measure from the foot of your bed (where you sit or lie) to the wall where the TV will be placed. Use that distance, not the room dimensions.
Bedroom mounting height is different
When watching from bed in a semi-reclined position, your eye level drops to around 75 to 90 cm from the floor. This is much lower than living room seating.
Mount the TV center at 85 cm for typical bedroom setups. This puts the center of a 43-inch TV (which is 53 cm tall) with its bottom edge at about 58 cm from the floor. It will look low when you are standing in the room, but it will be correct when you are actually watching from bed.
Common mistake: mounting the bedroom TV at living room height (105 cm center). From bed at 85 cm eye level, this creates an upward strain of 20 cm over the viewing distance, resulting in neck fatigue during evening viewing.
