TV too wide for your furniture
If the TV overhangs the stand or does not fit the entertainment unit, you have a few good options and one mistake to avoid.
Actual TV dimensions for all common sizes
TV diagonal sizes describe the screen, not the overall unit. Add the bezel and stand base, and the actual width is always larger than the diagonal implies. Use these figures when checking furniture fit.
| TV diagonal | Screen width | Typical overall width (with bezel) | Minimum stand width |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43” | 37.5” (95 cm) | 38 – 40” (97 – 102 cm) | 42” (107 cm) |
| 50” | 43.6” (111 cm) | 44 – 46” (112 – 117 cm) | 48” (122 cm) |
| 55” | 47.9” (122 cm) | 48 – 50” (122 – 127 cm) | 52” (132 cm) |
| 65” | 56.7” (144 cm) | 57 – 59” (145 – 150 cm) | 62” (157 cm) |
| 75” | 65.4” (166 cm) | 66 – 68” (168 – 173 cm) | 71” (180 cm) |
| 85” | 74.1” (188 cm) | 75 – 77” (190 – 196 cm) | 80” (203 cm) |
The minimum stand width column adds 4 inches (10 cm) clearance on each side for stability. The TV will physically balance on a narrower stand, but any side impact can topple it.
Three solutions in order of effort
Option 1: Wall mount the TV
The cleanest solution. The TV no longer needs the furniture for support, and the stand becomes media storage only. Use a VESA-compatible bracket rated for the TV weight. A 65-inch TV typically weighs 20 to 30 kg and requires a 400x400 or 600x400 mm VESA pattern.
Check the VESA pattern on your TV spec sheet before buying a bracket. Most TVs 43 inches and above use 200x200, 300x300, or 400x400 mm VESA. Confirm the bracket supports the exact pattern, not just a maximum size.
Option 2: Replace or extend the furniture
A longer media unit is the option if you want to keep the TV on a stand. Use the minimum stand width column above to size the new unit. Allow an extra 5 cm on each side beyond the TV overall width for visual balance.
Option 3: Step down one TV size
If neither above is practical, the next size down is worth considering. The jump from 65 to 55 inches reduces the width by approximately 18 cm (7 inches). For furniture that is 50 to 55 inches wide, a 55-inch TV fits comfortably where a 65-inch does not.
What not to do: do not leave a heavy TV overhanging a stand without securing it to the wall with a safety strap. An overhanging TV is at significant tipping risk, particularly in households with children or pets.
