TV looks too small: how to fix it
If the TV feels small from your couch, the size and viewing distance do not match. Here is how to work out the right size.
Why your TV looks small
The most common cause is a viewing distance that is too large for the screen size. TV size and distance are related by your field of view, and when that field of view is too narrow, the screen feels small and distant.
THX recommends a horizontal field of view between 28 and 40 degrees for comfortable viewing. SMPTE sets 30 degrees as the minimum for reference viewing, with 40 degrees as the cinematic target. Below 24 degrees, most people describe the TV as feeling too small for the room.

Your options in order of effectiveness
Option 1: Get a larger TV (recommended)
This is the correct fix. A larger screen at the same distance restores the field of view. People consistently underestimate how much larger a TV needs to be to fill a room correctly. The jump from 55 to 65 inches adds 36% more screen area. From 65 to 75 inches adds another 32%.
The most common regret in TV buying is going too small, not too large. At 10 feet, very few people wish they had bought a 65-inch instead of a 75-inch.
Option 2: Rearrange furniture to sit closer
If you are sitting at 12 feet and your TV is 65 inches, moving to 9 feet brings the field of view from 26 degrees to 35 degrees. A significant improvement without spending anything. Check that the new distance is not below the minimum for your TV's resolution (for 4K: screen width in inches multiplied by 0.8, converted to feet).
Option 3: Wall mount at the correct height
A TV on a low stand with the center at 70 cm will feel smaller than the same TV mounted correctly at 105 cm, because your sightline hits the bottom portion of the panel rather than the center. Correct mounting height improves perceived presence.
Does 4K change the calculation?
Yes. 4K allows you to sit closer without visible pixel structure, which means a given screen size delivers more field of view at shorter distances.
With 1080p, the minimum viewing distance is roughly 1.5 times the screen width in inches, converted to feet. With 4K, that drops to 0.8 times. So a 65-inch 4K TV can be watched from as close as 4.5 feet without visible pixels, while a 65-inch 1080p TV needs at least 6.8 feet.
4K: sit closer, go bigger
The minimum distance constraint is much looser. At 8 feet, a 4K 75-inch TV works perfectly. The same screen in 1080p at 8 feet starts to show pixel structure on close-up shots.
1080p: stay within limits
For 1080p, the formula is: minimum distance (feet) = TV diagonal (inches) x 0.075. A 65-inch 1080p TV needs at least 4.9 feet. Sit closer and you will see the pixel grid.
