TV Size for Living Room: How to Choose
The right TV size for a living room comes down to one measurement: the distance from your sofa to the TV wall. Here is the complete guide with size tables, room calculations, and a clear recommendation for every layout.
One measurement decides everything
Before looking at any size chart, measure the distance from where you normally sit to the wall where the TV will go. Measure in feet from the center of the sofa to the wall. That number is the only variable that actually matters.
Quick formula: Multiply your viewing distance in feet by 10 to get the minimum recommended TV size in inches. For example, 8 feet × 10 = 80 inches minimum. This approximates the SMPTE 30-degree standard and works as a fast sanity check before using the full calculator.
| Sofa Distance | Min Size (SMPTE) | Ideal Size | Max Comfortable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ft (183 cm) | 50" | 55" | 60" |
| 7 ft (213 cm) | 59" | 65" | 70" |
| 8 ft (244 cm) | 67" | 65–75" | 80" |
| 9 ft (274 cm) | 76" | 75" | 90" |
| 10 ft (305 cm) | 84" | 75–85" | 100" |
| 11 ft (335 cm) | 92" | 85" | 110" |
| 12 ft (366 cm) | 101" | 85–98" | 120" |
The “ideal size” column represents the SMPTE 30-degree reference range, where viewing is comfortable and detail is clearly visible without eyestrain. The minimum is based on SMPTE; the maximum is based on the THX 36-degree immersive standard.
Recommended size for every living room type
Living rooms come in a wide range of depths. Here are recommendations by common room configurations, accounting for typical furniture placement.
Why most people buy the wrong size
The two most common living room TV sizing mistakes pull in opposite directions: buying too small because it “looks right” in the shop, and buying too large based on an influencer review without accounting for the actual room.
Buying too small
TVs look significantly larger on a display floor surrounded by other screens and at close range. A 55-inch TV in a showroom feels enormous. The same TV mounted on your living room wall at 10 feet feels disappointing. The industry rule of thumb is that buyers consistently wish they had gone one size larger, never smaller.
Ignoring viewing distance
Screen size without viewing distance is meaningless. A 75-inch TV in a room where the sofa is only 7 feet away produces an uncomfortable 40-degree viewing angle. A 55-inch TV in the same position at 12 feet is disappointingly small. Measure the distance first, then size the TV to it.
Prioritising width over height
Many people choose a TV size based on whether it fits their entertainment unit or TV stand width. This is a valid constraint but should not be the primary driver. If the unit only fits a 55-inch TV but your room calls for a 65-inch, consider replacing the unit, wall-mounting the TV, or at minimum understanding the visual compromise you are making.
For a standard UK or US living room with a sofa 8 to 10 feet from the TV wall, 65 to 75 inches is the correct size range. The 65-inch is the safe choice; the 75-inch is the right choice if the budget allows and the room is closer to 10 feet deep.
Other factors that affect living room TV choice
Wall space and furniture
A 75-inch TV body is approximately 66 to 68 inches wide. If your living room wall has alcoves, windows, or radiators constraining the mounting position, measure the available width before finalising the size. A TV that overpowers the wall or sits lopsided in a recess looks worse than a slightly smaller, well-positioned screen.
Mount vs stand
Wall mounting a TV for a living room almost always improves the look and frees floor space. The main constraint is finding wall studs or masonry for a secure anchor, particularly for TVs above 65 inches which weigh 15 to 25 kg. See the TV mount types guide for the differences between fixed, tilt, and full-motion mounts.
Viewing height
The center of the TV should be at or slightly below your seated eye level (about 100 to 105 cm from the floor for a standard sofa). This is a separate consideration from size but equally important for comfort. Use the mount height calculator to get the exact position for your TV.
