Most people buy monitors based on what fits their budget. The right approach is to start with how far you sit, what resolution you want, and what you do most. The calculator below uses ergonomic and pixel-density standards to recommend a size that will actually feel right at your desk.
Quick rule: for a 1440p monitor at typical desk distance (60 to 70 cm), 27 inches is the sweet spot. For 4K, you can go up to 32 inches without needing to scale text. For 1080p, anything bigger than 24 inches starts to look pixelated up close.
A monitor size that's perfect for video editing is overkill for spreadsheets. A size that's great for spreadsheets feels cramped for code. The recommendations below are based on the angular size that ergonomic research shows people work best with for each task.

Why 27 inch 1440p is the most popular monitor size in the world: 109 PPI sits perfectly in the unscaled comfort zone. Text is sharp without needing 125% or 150% scaling, applications behave predictably, and the screen is big enough for serious multitasking.
Ergonomic guidelines from BSR/HFES and ISO 9241 recommend a horizontal viewing angle of around 30 to 35 degrees for productivity work. That's the angle your monitor should fill when you're seated at your normal working position. Below 25 degrees, the monitor feels small and you lean in. Above 40 degrees, you have to turn your head to see the edges.

Horizontal viewing angle in degrees. The ergonomic comfort zone is 30 to 40 degrees. Exceeding 50 degrees is fine for occasional use but can cause neck strain when sustained.
Two thirds of office workers sit between 50 and 80 cm (20 to 31 inches) from their monitor. If you don't know your distance, measure from your eyes to the centre of the screen with a tape measure or string. The result is usually different from what you'd guess.

184 PPI looks sharp but everything appears tiny without OS scaling. Once you scale to 200%, you've thrown away the resolution advantage and you're effectively running at 1080p. 4K only makes sense at 27 inches or larger.
69 PPI at 32 inches means visible pixels at desk distance and blurry text. 1080p at 32 inches only works if you sit at TV distances (1.5 metres or more), which defeats the point of a desk monitor.
Ultrawides are excellent for productivity, video editing, and trading. They're hit-or-miss for gaming (some games support 21:9, many don't) and full-screen video (most content is 16:9 with black bars on the sides). Make sure your main use case actually benefits before committing.
If you bought a big monitor on a small desk, you'll naturally sit too close and the angular size will exceed the 40 degree comfort threshold. Either move the desk back, use a monitor arm to push the screen further away, or accept a smaller monitor.
Curved monitors only help at large sizes. A curved 24 or 27 inch monitor is mostly a marketing gimmick. Curve genuinely helps at 32 inches and above (especially ultrawides) by reducing the head-turn needed to see the edges. Below 32 inches, curved is a small benefit at best.
