Unlike TV viewing, monitor distance is governed by workplace ergonomics standards as much as by optics. The right distance affects posture, eye strain, and long-term neck health.
The most common ergonomic guideline is to sit at arm's length from your monitor - roughly 20-40 inches (50-100 cm) depending on screen size. For a typical 27" monitor, this means about 24-30 inches.
Higher resolution screens pack more pixels into the same physical space, making individual pixels invisible at closer distances. A 27" 4K monitor can be used comfortably at 20 inches. The same screen at 1080p will show visible pixel structure at that distance and look noticeably soft.
| Monitor Size | 1080p Distance | 1440p Distance | 4K Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22-24" | 24-30" | 20-26" | 16-22" |
| 27" | 28-36" | 22-30" | 18-24" |
| 32" | 32-42" | 26-34" | 20-28" |
| 34-38" ultrawide | 34-44" | 28-36" | 22-30" |
Eye level matters too: Distance alone is not enough. The top third of your monitor should sit at eye level or slightly below. If the screen is too high or too low, you will strain your neck regardless of distance.
Distance and height work together for a fully ergonomic setup.
