TV Mounted Too High: Fix the Neck Pain

Neck pain after watching TV is almost always caused by a TV mounted too high. Here is how to diagnose the problem, calculate the correct height, and fix it without remounting if necessary.

Diagnosing the Problem

Is your TV actually too high?

Sit in your normal watching position and look straight ahead at eye level. If the center of the TV is above that point, the TV is too high. If the center is more than 10 cm above eye level, it is causing or will cause neck pain.

🟢
Correct height
TV center is at or up to 5 cm below seated eye level. No neck tilt required. This is the target.
🟡
Marginal
TV center is 5 to 15 cm above eye level. Slight upward tilt. Manageable for short sessions, uncomfortable for 2+ hours.
🔴
Too high
TV center is more than 15 cm above eye level. Consistent neck extension. Will cause pain and fatigue on regular viewing sessions.
⚠️

The typical mistake: TVs are often mounted so the bottom edge is near eye level, which puts the center 35 to 50 cm too high depending on screen size. This is visually intuitive but ergonomically wrong. The bottom edge should be well below eye level so the center lands at eye level.

The Fix

Three ways to solve a TV that is too high

Option 1: Remount at the correct height (best solution)

The most effective fix is lowering the TV to the correct position. Use the mount height calculator to find the target center position, then remount the bracket at that height. This requires filling the old bracket holes and drilling new ones, which is a straightforward DIY job in most cases.

Option 2: Replace with a tilt or full-motion mount (practical fix)

If remounting is not practical (solid brick walls, rented property, above-fireplace installation), replacing the current mount with a full-motion articulating mount is the next best solution. A full-motion mount with 15 to 20 degrees of downward tilt brings the screen angle toward eye level even if the bracket itself stays high. See the mount types guide for specific recommendations.

Option 3: Raise your seating position

If the TV is fixed and cannot be moved, raising your eye level to meet the screen is the third option. A higher sofa, bar-height seating, or watching from a recliner chair that raises your upper body can reduce the viewing angle. This is the least practical solution for most rooms but can be effective in specific layouts like kitchen TVs or commercial spaces.

FAQ

Common questions: TV height and neck pain

The relationship is significant. A study of occupational neck pain shows that sustained static neck extension of as little as 10 degrees for 30 minutes creates measurable increases in neck muscle activity. For a two-hour film at a 15-degree upward angle, the cumulative load on cervical spine muscles is comparable to hours of sedentary computer work with poor posture. Lowering the TV to the correct height eliminates this load entirely.
The center of the TV should be at approximately 100 to 105 cm from the floor for standard upright couch seating. For a relaxed or slightly reclined position, target 95 to 100 cm. The bottom edge of the TV will be significantly lower than eye level because the screen itself is 53 to 106 cm tall depending on size.
Yes, with a full-motion mount. Replace the fixed or tilt mount with a full-motion articulating mount that has at least 15 to 20 degrees of downward tilt. Combined with a reclining sofa that raises your eye level, this can reduce the effective viewing angle significantly. See the above fireplace guide for the full solution.
