How High to Mount a TV: The Complete Guide

Most wall-mounted TVs are too high. The correct height is lower than you think: the center of the screen should be at your seated eye level, not at eye level when standing, and not “about halfway up the wall.”

The Rule

Center of screen = seated eye level

The single rule that determines correct TV mounting height: the center of the screen should be at or slightly below your eye level when you are in your normal viewing position. Not your standing eye level. Not the middle of the wall. Your seated eye level.

Couch upright
105 cm
Standard seated eye level. Use this for most living room installations.
Couch relaxed
100 cm
Slightly reclined. Common for long TV sessions on a deep sofa.
Fully reclined
90 cm
Recliner or lounger. Eye level drops significantly when fully back.
Propped in bed
88 cm
Sitting up in bed with pillows. Lower than sofa viewing.
Bar stool / high chair
125 cm
Higher seating raises eye level. Adjust mounting height accordingly.
Standing
160 cm
Kitchen and commercial use only. Not relevant for primary TV rooms.

Heights by TV Size

Exact bottom edge heights for every TV size

These bottom edge heights place the TV center at 102 cm, correct for standard upright couch seating. Adjust downward by 5 cm for relaxed seating or 15 cm for fully reclined viewing.

⚠️

The most common mistake: Mounting the TV so the bottom edge is at eye level. This puts the screen center 35 to 50 cm above eye level depending on TV size, forcing a consistent upward tilt. The bottom edge should be significantly below eye level, not at it.

Why It Matters

What happens when a TV is mounted too high

Looking upward at a consistent 10 to 20-degree angle for two hours compresses the cervical spine and creates sustained contraction in the neck extensors. This produces the same kind of muscle fatigue as spending two hours looking up at a ceiling-mounted projector screen. The pain is usually felt in the back of the neck and upper shoulders, and it often does not register as TV-related because it builds gradually and peaks after the session ends.

If your TV is currently mounted too high and cannot be lowered, a full-motion or tilt mount that angles the screen downward is the practical solution. See the TV mount types guide for tilt mount recommendations, and the TV too high guide for fixing an existing installation.

FAQ

Common questions: TV mounting height

Seated eye level. This is the position you are in when watching, and it is the position that matters for ergonomics. Standing eye level (around 155 to 165 cm for most adults) is far too high for a TV center point. A TV mounted so the center is at standing eye level would place it 50 to 60 cm above the correct seated position.
The bottom edge of the TV should be at least 20 to 30 cm above the top of the mantel. However, this typically places the TV center well above the ideal seated eye level. A full-motion mount with strong downward tilt is essential for above-fireplace installations. See the above-fireplace guide for the full calculation.
Yes. Larger TVs have greater height, which means the bottom edge needs to be lower to keep the center at the same eye level. A 65-inch TV (81 cm tall) has its bottom edge at about 62 cm for upright couch seating, while a 43-inch TV (53 cm tall) has its bottom edge at about 76 cm for the same center position. Larger TVs are mounted with their bottom edge closer to the floor.
