Outdoor Movie Night: The Complete Setup Guide
A backyard movie night is one of the best things about spring and summer. Here is everything you need: the right screen size, the right projector, how to handle sound, and when to start the film.

How far to sit from an outdoor movie screen
Outdoor movie setups typically have viewers at 10 to 20 feet from the screen with seating spread across a wider area than indoors. A 100 to 120-inch projected screen is the sweet spot for most garden setups.
| Seating Distance | Recommended Screen | Throw Distance Needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8–10 ft | 80–100" | 6–8 ft (1.0 throw ratio) | Small patio or deck movie night |
| 10–14 ft | 100–120" | 8–10 ft | Most common garden setup |
| 14–20 ft | 120–150" | 10–14 ft | Larger garden, blanket viewing |
| 20+ ft | 150"+ | 14+ ft | Party / event scale |
Throw ratio: A standard projector with a 1.0 throw ratio produces a 100-inch image from 8.3 feet away. A short-throw projector (0.5 throw ratio) produces the same image from 4.2 feet. Check the throw ratio of your specific projector model before choosing a placement position. The projector's spec sheet lists the throw ratio or provides a distance-to-screen-size calculator.
Getting audio right outdoors
Sound is the part of outdoor movie setups that most people underinvest in. Outdoors, sound dissipates in all directions rather than bouncing off room surfaces. You need significantly more speaker output than the same indoor setup would require.
Bluetooth speakers
A single large Bluetooth speaker (30W+) is the simplest setup and works well for groups of up to 10 people at 10 to 15 feet. Place the speaker near the screen and facing the audience. At distances beyond 15 feet, two speakers placed either side of the screen give better coverage. Top options in 2026: JBL Charge 6, Bose SoundLink Max, Sony SRS-XG500.
Wired outdoor speakers
For a fixed patio setup, wired outdoor speakers mounted on the patio posts or wall give the best sound quality and coverage. Route speaker cables through weatherproof conduit. Outdoor speakers rated for UV and moisture exposure are available from Polk Audio, Klipsch, and Yamaha at reasonable price points.
Soundbar via extension
A soundbar powered via an outdoor extension cable is a practical middle ground. It delivers better directional sound than a Bluetooth speaker and can be positioned directly below or above the screen. Not weatherproof but practical for one-night use brought outside and returned indoors.
When to start the film in spring and summer
Projector images require darkness to look their best. The timing for full darkness varies significantly by location and time of year. Here are the approximate times for full astronomical dusk in 2026 by region.
The ALR screen workaround: If your gathering starts before full darkness, an ambient light rejection (ALR) screen makes projector images watchable in low-light conditions like twilight. ALR screens reflect the projector beam toward the audience while absorbing ambient light from other directions. They allow you to start a film 30 to 45 minutes earlier than a standard white screen would permit.
