Outdoor TV Viewing Distance: How Far to Sit
The same THX and SMPTE standards apply outdoors. What changes is that outdoor seating spreads further and from wider angles. Here is how to size your screen for every outdoor layout.
Same standards, bigger screen needed
The THX 36-degree and SMPTE 30-degree viewing angle standards apply outdoors exactly as they do indoors. The difference is that outdoor seating is less controlled: guests spread out, some sit further back, some sit at the sides. This means the screen needs to be larger than a strict single-viewer calculation suggests.
The outdoor rule: For an outdoor setup, size up by at least one increment from what the formula gives for the primary seating distance. If the calculator recommends 65 inches for your distance, buy 75 inches. The extra coverage ensures guests at the back and sides of your outdoor space still get a good picture.
| Primary Seating Distance | Indoor Ideal | Outdoor Recommended | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8–10 ft | 65" | 75" | Side and rear guests covered |
| 10–14 ft | 75" | 85" | Most common patio depth |
| 14–18 ft | 85" | 98" or projector | Garden / open deck setups |
| 18+ ft | 98"+ | Projector | Flat panel impractical at this scale |
Viewing distance by outdoor space type
Outdoor size by distance reference table
| Outdoor Distance | THX Size (36°) | SMPTE Size (30°) | Recommended for outdoor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 69" | 80" | 75" |
| 10 ft | 86" | 101" | 85" |
| 12 ft | 103" | 121" | 85–98" or projector |
| 14 ft | 120" | 140" | Projector strongly recommended |
| 16 ft | 138" | 161" | Projector (120" screen) |
| 20 ft | 172" | 201" | Projector (150"+ screen) |
At 12 feet outdoors, the THX standard calls for a 103-inch screen. That is only practical with a projector. For outdoor setups with primary seating beyond 12 feet, the outdoor projector vs TV guide covers when to make the switch.
