Outdoor TV Viewing Distance: How Far to Sit

The same THX and SMPTE standards apply outdoors. What changes is that outdoor seating spreads further and from wider angles. Here is how to size your screen for every outdoor layout.

The Outdoor Distance Rule

Same standards, bigger screen needed

The THX 36-degree and SMPTE 30-degree viewing angle standards apply outdoors exactly as they do indoors. The difference is that outdoor seating is less controlled: guests spread out, some sit further back, some sit at the sides. This means the screen needs to be larger than a strict single-viewer calculation suggests.

💡

The outdoor rule: For an outdoor setup, size up by at least one increment from what the formula gives for the primary seating distance. If the calculator recommends 65 inches for your distance, buy 75 inches. The extra coverage ensures guests at the back and sides of your outdoor space still get a good picture.

By Setup Type

Viewing distance by outdoor space type

Covered patio / pergola
10–14 ft
Furniture stays in place. Single viewing direction. 75–85" recommended. Permanent mount possible.
🏖
Open deck
12–18 ft
Seating spreads further. More side-angle viewers. 85" minimum; projector preferred at 16+ ft.
🌿
Garden / lawn
15–25 ft
Blankets and chairs spread across a wide area. Projector with 100"+ screen is the right solution at these distances.
🏒
Pool area
10–16 ft
Viewers from pool at varying distances. High brightness essential. IP66+ TV required near water.
🍳
Outdoor dining area
8–12 ft
Fixed table and chairs. Predictable layout. 75" works well. Sound matters more here than screen size.
🏛
Bar / outdoor kitchen
6–10 ft
Counter-height viewing. Higher mount position than standard. 65–75" typical. High ambient light environment.

At 12 feet outdoors, the THX standard calls for a 103-inch screen. That is only practical with a projector. For outdoor setups with primary seating beyond 12 feet, the outdoor projector vs TV guide covers when to make the switch.

FAQ

Common questions: outdoor viewing distance

The standards are the same, but the practical recommendation changes. Outdoors, seating is less controlled, viewers spread out, and some will be further back or to the side. To ensure everyone gets a decent picture, size up from the formula result by one increment. A room that calls for 65 inches indoors needs at least 75 inches for an equivalent outdoor setup.
There is no fixed minimum distance required by TV manufacturers, but electrical safety regulations in most countries require that electrical appliances are positioned beyond the splash zone of a pool, typically at least 1.5 to 2 metres from the pool edge. Use a TV with IP66 or IP67 rating for any poolside installation and ensure all wiring is run through weatherproof conduit by a qualified electrician.
At 15 feet outdoors, the THX 36-degree standard calls for a 129-inch screen, which is not available as a flat panel at any practical price. The practical option is either a projector with a 120 to 150-inch screen, or an 85 to 98-inch TV accepted as a slightly undersized solution for the distance. Most people find an 85-inch TV at 15 feet looks reasonable for casual outdoor viewing even though it is below the THX standard for that distance.
